Comparison of culture media for enrichment and isolation of Salmonella spp. from frozen Channel catfish and Vietnamese basa fillets

Frozen fillets of Channel catfish and Vietnamese basa fish were used to compare Salmonella spp. recovery effectiveness of selective enrichment in Rappaport–Vassiliadis (RV) broth and tetrathionate broth (TT) and selective isolation on Hekteon enteric (HE) agar, xylose lysine deoxycholate (XLD) agar, and bismuth sulfite (BS) agar. Isolate confirmation was through fatty acid methyl ester analysis. Of 60 samples analyzed, 25 were found contaminated with Salmonella (42% incidence). Salmonella spp. recovery after enrichment in RV medium was 35% on HE agar, 30% on XLD agar, and 42% on BS agar. Similarly, after enrichment in TT broth, HE and XLD agars recovered 22% each and BS agar recovered 37%. No performance difference (p > 0.05) was observed in the recovery of Salmonella using the combinations of BS, HE, and XLD agars with RV broth and BS agar with TT broth. The combination of selective enrichment in RV and selective isolation on BS gave numerically greatest isolation of Salmonella from Channel catfish and Vietnamese basa fish compared to other isolation combinations.     

The CLAS forward electromagnetic calorimeter

The CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) at Jefferson Lab utilizes six iron-free superconducting coils to provide an approximately toroidal magnetic field. The six sectors are instrumented individually to form six independent spectrometers. The forward region (8°<θ<45°) of each sector is equipped with a lead–scintillator electromagnetic sampling calorimeter (EC), 16 radiation lengths thick, using a novel triangular geometry with stereo readout. With its good energy and position resolution, the EC is used to provide the primary electron trigger for CLAS. It is also used to reject pions, reconstruct π° and η decays and detect neutrons. This paper treats the design, construction and performance of the calorimeter.

Tissue radiation dosages using the RVG-S with and without niobium filtration

Twenty-five free tissue transfers for reconstruction after lower limb trauma or release of scar contractures were performed in 23 children over an 8-year period. The ages ranged from 2 to 14 years (mean 7.1 years). Fourteen (61%) patients had major associated injuries. The reconstruction sites were all in the distal leg. The overall vascular success rate was 96%. Three patients underwent re-explorations because of vascular insufficiency. One flap failed and two were salvaged. The causes of vascular complications were considered to be inadequate debridement of an avulsed vessel, venous kinking and inadequate protection of the vascular pedicle. The three cases with vascular insufficiency were children with associated injuries on the ipsilateral leg proximally. Postoperative complications were not uncommon (28%). Six of the seven complications occurred in patients with major associated injuries. The mean follow-up was 57 months. Long-term problems such as a limping gait, frequent flap ulcers, toe contracture or a bulky flap were common. Our results suggest that free tissue transfer is reliable and safe for the reconstruction of major leg injuries in children. Associated injuries proximal to the reconstructed defects on the ipsilateral leg predispose to more vascular complications. Since postoperative complications and long-term morbidity are common in children, special precautions should be taken with the preoperative assessment, planning, execution of surgery and postoperative care to achieve better results.     

Reduced performance of male and female athletes at 580 m altitude

Patients with craniocervical mandibular (TMD) disorders can present with tinnitus as a primary or secondary complaint. The embryology and functional anatomy of the middle ear, temporomandibular joint, muscles of mastication and associated tendons, ligaments, blood vessels, nerves and lymphatics was found to be helpful in establishing etiologic concepts which relate tinnitus to these temporomandibular disorders. In addition to etiologic concepts, treatment modalities are described. The authors relate their experiences as well as those of others with different patient populations.     

Early classroom behaviors and later misconduct.

A longitudinal study examined the relationship between teacher-rated behaviors (the Devereux Elementary School Behavior Rating Scale) in kindergarten through Grade 3 and delinquency and school misconduct throughout adolescence. 659 children who were at risk because of their urban minority living conditions were initially assessed in 1968, and 380 were successfully followed up in 1982. An early high-risk pattern was identified in both sexes that indicated that Ss who were overly and disruptively involved socially and who failed to modulate their own behavior to accommodate others were likely to come into conflict with authority quite early in life and into adolescence. Results are discussed in relationship to other research on temperament, parent–child interaction, and possible preventive intervention.
